~Allergy Testing~

REPOST
Thought I’d give a quick update. I took Johnny to his pediatrician for allergy tests as well as a celiac test. It’s worth mentioning that this pediatrician doesn't feel that allergies have anything to do with ADHD so I just avoid the topic with her. We did a blood test because we'd already done the scratch test on the back and it didn't show any allergies. If you can do it the blood test is the only way to go.
He had to eat lots of wheat, dairy, soy, etc for 14 days. Then his blood was drawn. Of course during these two weeks he was feeling like crap. Headaches, had a bowel movement every 2 or 3 days, he couldn’t sleep, had dark circles under his eyes, his ADHD symptoms all reappeared…the list goes on and on.
The results are back and guess what, he doesn't have celiac…woo hoo! However, he had a major reaction to almost everything tested (which I found odd)—wheat, soy, peanuts, walnuts, corn, clams, sesame seeds,  & scallops.
He didn't have a reaction to eggs or dairy. The eggs we knew but dairy he has a reaction to. So we tested dairy last week. He ate moderate amounts of milk, cheese, and sour cream (on his baked potatoes and on his tacos). He had diarrhea so badly that he couldn’t stand up without going in his pants. He said it was gooey slug coming out (sorry for being so graphic) so parents please make your decisions by how your child reacts NOT by what a test shows.
The Dr. wanted to do more testing for other foods but I declined—first, my son begged not to have to eat all that food for another 2 weeks, and secondly, I don’t’ really care what the test show…if he reacts to it we plan on removing it from his diet.

So bottom line, my kid has some major food intolerances!!

  1. I was researching something else when I cam upon your blog. Thanks for the information and I hope your son continues to thrive. I am very impressed with your dilligence and with your good sense in looking for the results your son has rather than total reliance on the test results. Best wishes.

  3. I'm curious: what are your thoughts on the difference between eliminating just wheat versus all gluten foods? My daughter is 7 and I've known about her peanut and fish allergy since she was a baby. She also is an atopic kid (chronic itchy skin) and she has adhd symptoms. A psychologist avoided dx her with adhd due to her medical background. She never tested positive to wheat allergies but I'm about to do an elimination diet for 3 weeks. No nuts, no fish, no wheat, no sugar, no dairy. But I'm wondering if I should take out all gluten. Afterwards, ill start reintroducing things. My daughter has severe mood swings, hyperactivity, impulsivity primarily in the classroom. She is also loving, kind, social and otherwise eager to please. I want to try everything before Ritalin. I've removed all chemicals in the house and she no longer has puffy eyes, skin infections and she sleeps better. She is my little puzzle!

  4. Hi, this is Christin, I can't remember my password so I can't log in ;o)

I took out gluten because I’ve found that most people who are sensitive or allergic to wheat are also to gluten. When you do your 3 week elimination diet I’d include gluten simply because “now is the time”…you are going through a lot of effort so why not do it now. When you add gluten back you’ll see if there is a reaction. Also when you are wheat free you are gluten free so it is easy for my son to tell people that he is wheat free…most people don’t’ know what gluten is so it’s just easier to say, “I don’t eat wheat” (I do know there is wheat that has the gluten removed, but we don’t eat that either—I don’t want to risk him having a reaction.) Have you seen this clip from Dr. Oz? It’s all about wheat and hoe is effects the body. Worth looking at http://www.doctoroz.com/episode/are-you-addicted-wheat?video=15862 . Personally I think wheat is just a good thing to avoid, especially for our children that “reacted” to everything. I wish you all the best and please let me know how the elimination diet goes. My son was a puzzle too ;o)
